To carry out educational and service activities of the Criminal Justice Initiative, including outreach, facilitation of inmate HIV/AIDS Peer Education, support groups, confidential HIV counseling and testing, special activities and other services. To design, implement and revise as necessary, trainings for inmate Peer Educators, facility staff and other individuals. Requirements (Education, Experience, Certification, Knowledge, Skill) Position requires an Associate Degree in Health Education, Nursing or related, and/or three (3) years' experience in Health Education. Demonstrated ability to study information so as to determine, define and comprehend its elements. Position Responsibilities Position is responsible for developing and maintaining culturally sensitive appropriate literature on, and educational approaches for HIV/AIDS education for all targeted populations Teaching and counseling inmates and facility staff about HIV/AIDS. PHE must be a credible, culturally sensitive educator, and be able to assist clients in developing risk reduction plans. Listening skills are also especially important for quality crisis intervention and HIV test counseling work. Position is expected to encourage others to share knowledge and information with timeliness while modeling those same behaviors. Position must maintain productive work relationships with colleagues and others. Position is recognized as one who is very knowledgeable. Coordination of outreach, education and other services with other PathStone staff, inmate Peer Educators, DOCS staff and community providers. Development of evaluation tools assessment of W/PI Program components such as REACH. Collection of daily program data. Monthly reporting of cumulative data to supervisor. Has a "can-do" attitude and is a positive influence on others. Encourages others to take positive action on problem solving and/or new assignments. Position includes the development and use of HIV/AIDS related training materials for inmates, inmate Peer Educators, facility staff and others. The PHE is also responsible for the orientation and ongoing training for the Peer Educators. Working Conditions/Environment Entails a high level of contact with persons at risk for serious illnesses such as hepatitis, tuberculosis and HIV. The prison work site is uncomfortably hot year round. Working with populations affected/infected with HIV, as well as with inmate populations presents unique challenges to coping with stress management skills.
